Helpful organizations for information on Suicide/Mental Health Awareness and Prevention

US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)

SAMHSA funds and supports the Lifeline, there are also resources available for training and to the community. www.samhsa.gov

American Foundation For Suicide Prevention

AFSP provides resources and training. Through their Out of The Darkness and Campus Walks, they fund programs for professionals, survivors of suicide loss, and the public about suicide prevention. Every State has an AFSP chapter. www.afsp.org

The JED Foundation

The JED Foundation protects emotional health and prevents suicide among college and university students by: (1) helping colleges and universities create comprehensive programs to promote mental health and prevent suicide, (2) helping parents recognize and find support for a child’s mental health problems, and (3) helping young people recognize and find help for their mental health problems as well as those of their peers and friends. www.jedfoundation.org

The Jason Foundation

The Jason Foundation, Inc. (JFI) is dedicated to the prevention of the “Silent Epidemic” of youth suicide through educational and awareness programs that equip young people, educators/youth workers and parents with the tools and resources to help identify and assist at-risk youth.

The Jason Foundation provides support for Coaches and Athletes in the area of mental health awareness.

988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the United States. Gray Matters Collective has chapters in local high schools, colleges, workplaces — you name it. We empower students, working adults, and others to have the tools and knowledge to be mental health advocates and make a real difference in our world. The Trevor Project is a nonprofit organization that provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ youth ages 13-24, educates young people and adults on detecting and responding to suicide risk among LGBTQ youth, and advocates for laws and policies that will reduce suicide among LGBTQ young people. www.thetrevorproject.org
